Twenty-nine years on a department-store fitting floor taught me this: the difference between invisible and striking is fit, colour and proportion — not your budget. Ninety-three methods, $47, and no sponsored brands anywhere in the book.

What people did with it.

★★★★★
I threw out eleven beige cardigans the day I read rule 9 and I have not missed one of them. My daughter said I looked like I'd had something done. It was a navy blazer from a consignment shop for $22.
— Diane R., Tulsa, OK
★★★★★
I spent $18 on a tailor to take in the shoulders of three shirts I already owned. Two people at church asked where I'd been shopping. I've bought almost nothing new this year.
— Carol P., Sacramento, CA

The travel formula got me through three weeks in Italy with one carry-on. No wrinkles, no luggage fees, and I was the only one of us who looked decent in every photograph.

About the author

Margaret Lyle

I spent twenty-nine years on the sales floor of a big department store — the lingerie counter, then women's sportswear, then fourteen years in personal styling, where they sent me out to fit customers in their own closets. I have stood in more than two thousand of them. I've watched women with real money look invisible and women with almost none look like a million dollars, and the difference was never the budget. It was fit, colour and proportion — things nobody taught us, because the industry stops talking to us at about fifty-two. When my store closed I started a little channel from my spare bedroom. I'm not a fashion person. I'm a fitter, and this is everything I

Questions

Before you decide.

I'm 71 and I don't want to look like I'm chasing my thirties. Is this book for me?

It's written exactly for you. Nothing in here is about looking younger — it's about looking like yourself, on purpose. The rules cover what reads current at 60, 70 and beyond, and none of them require anything that feels like a costume.

I'm on a fixed income. How much does following this actually cost?

Some methods cost nothing — the neckline test, the ten-second outfit test, the Sunday closet reset. The ones that cost money are priced out: a hem alteration, one bra, one pair of walking shoes. Most women find the book pays for itself by stopping three wrong purchases.

Do I need to be a certain size or shape?

No. The methods are built on measurement, not size labels. Margaret fitted women from a size 4 to a size 28 over twenty-nine years and the rules for neckline, rise and skirt length work the same way — they just give different numbers.

Is this going to be full of brands I need to buy?

There isn't a single sponsored brand in the book. Where clothing is named, it's described by fabric, cut and price range, so you can find the equivalent in your own shops or second-hand.

I hate shopping. Will this make me shop more?

It's designed to make you shop far less. The capsule plan and the cost-per-wear ledger exist so that you know what you have, know what's missing, and walk out of a shop empty-handed most of the time.

What format is it, and can I print the bonuses?

It's a standard digital book you can read on a phone, tablet or computer, and every bonus — the capsule plan, the outfit cards, the tracker — is laid out to print cleanly at home on ordinary paper.
